The most surprising of this video was not that Alexander Ovechkin was not suspended after this hit (which shouldn’t come as an surprise at all, what good is the Pens-Caps/Crosby-Ovechkin match-up without the Ovechkin part?) but that most people seem to think this is some malicious hit by OV. From the looks of it, it was not a malicious hit at all between two off-ice friends. Gonchar goes to tun and avoid a check by OV (who actually plays the puck, which no one who wanted a “charging” penalty seems to acknowledge) and leaves his leg in the skating path of #8 - enter collision. The funniest part of the video is the CBC announcers claiming that Alexander Ovechkin is trying to jump into Gonchar’s leg to hurt him, but the “jumping” just amounts of OV trying to catch his balance after almost being tripped by Gonchar’s leg. No dirty play here.
